For visitors wanting to experience Hong Kong's nightlife, the choice of venues is plenty. Those visitors who happen to be staying at a Tsim Sha Tsui hotel or any of the number of Kowloon luxury hotels, for example, will find themselves in the right area to experience the al fresco scene of Knutsford Terrace. This strip of bars and restaurants offers a diverse mix of locals, expats and tourists and is definitely among the places for a good night out.
Many of the bars here are packed put from about 8 pm onwards, while they also wind up a bit earlier than other spots in Hong Kong at around 12 am. Bahama Mamas is said to be Knutsford Terrace's most famous venue, where the beach-themed bar seems to keep the crowd firmly in party mode.
Other venues worth checking out are the Observatory Court area, just around the corner, and Aqua Spirit in Tsim Sha Tsui where the views of Hong Kong are pretty awesome and the staff know their stuff when it comes to cocktails.
Hong Kong's MTR (Mass Transit Railway) network also helps in getting between venues in different districts, or from a boutique hotel in Kowloon, for example, to Lan Kwai Fong in Central. Similarly, visitors staying in a design hotel in Tsim Sha Tsui shouldn't have much difficulty in accessing various areas of Hong Kong to try the nightlife.
Hong Kong's Lan Kwai Fong district is where to find a multitude of venues that range from down and dirty pubs to great nightclubs. Home to what are considered some of the best bars in Hong Kong, this district has earned itself the nickname ‘party central'.
Among the venues to visit are Dublin Jacks, a sleek Irish bar with a wonderfully friendly atmosphere and where major sporting events are screened; Bulldogs Bar and Grill, a traditional British-Australian pub and probably best known as a place for ‘drunken antics; and Hong Kong Brewhouse, home to arguably the city's best selection of beers and a great choice for relaxing and trying out the numerous brews on offer.
While the various venues are good for a night out in themselves, they can also be visited pub-crawl style for which they are ideal, being located within short walking distance of each other and easy to find.
Clubs in Hong Kong are among the best in Asia, ranging from the most exclusive to the most refined and everything in between. Some venues have a rather strict door policy and it's often a good idea to call a club ahead of time and try to get your name on the guest list, or arrive early to increase the chance of getting in.
Said to be the hottest dancefloor in Hong Kong is Dragon-I. With an uber exclusive guest list, and situated above the party district of Lan Kwai Fong, the club's interior is a sharp, designer fusion of Asian and New York influences such as secluded booth-style seating and seductive lantern lighting. An interesting yet controversial element of Dragon-I is that it keeps live birds in cages throughout the venue.
In the heart of Lan Kwai Fong, FINDS draws a more mature crowd that has a knack of being hip without needing to flaunt it. The Scandinavian theme serves up an understated design of simple woods and light colours and there's a large balcony with views of the party crowds on the streets of Lan Kwai Fong. The emphasis at FINDS is on socializing, while there are top draw DJs playing on the weekend.
Arguably the king of Hong Kong's exclusive clubs is M1NT, and it has a door policy to match. It's a members only club inspired by the original in London and those wanting to join will need a hefty wad of cash to do so. This obviously not being a viable option for out-of-town visitors, M1NT does have nights which are open to non-members.
