Horseracing Legacy at the One and Only Hong Kong Racing Museum

Ideally located in the Happy Valley Racecourse lies a sprawling edifice dedicated to the evolution of the Hong Kong Jockey Club and all its milestone moments throughout the annals of time. Simply dubbed the Hong Kong Racing Museum the venue is the only institution in the country devoted to the horseracing legacy of this former British colony and its march towards progress in the course of history. Having opened its doors to the public nearly 16 years ago on 18th October, 1996 the museum has grown in size and scale to become the city's singular authority on the sport of horseracing and the Hong Kong Jockey Club's charitable endeavours to uplift the local community. Spread out over an expansive area of 6000 square feet the venue is divided into eight thematic exhibition halls that document the development of this sporting activity introduced by the British and its journey towards its current stature.

One of the must-see exhibits at the museum is of course The Origin of Horses gallery which displays the route horses traversed from the northern quarters of China, their place of birth, to reach Hong Kong Island during migration. Another highlight at the locale is the skeleton of 'Silver Lining' where guests can explore the skeletal remains of the city-state's most successful race horse Silver Lining, who was incidentally a three time Hong Kong national champion. Valuable information on the winning thoroughbred is available through two interactive game consoles which serve as a virtual library dedicated to the champion horse. A video presentation also takes visitors on a visual journey of a day in the life of a champion horse trainer and the various characteristics that separate a winner from an ordinary race horse.

The Moments in History - The Hong Kong Jockey Club Exhibition is the newest addition to the venue's special exhibition catalogue and will run through till mid 2012. This unique showcase delves in to the back-story of the Hong Kong Jockey Club since it was first set up in 1884. A souvenir kiosk is also on-site at the museum for guests who wish to take back a momento of their visit to the prestigious establishment.
